On a worn C/V joint you can see that the curved races on both the inner and outer part have an indentation in the center or that the hardened surface have started to break up and chip away.
I have yet to see a fail or chipped ball.
The break up of surface happens on the load side, so one way of saving money is to swap the two C/V joints from Left to Right and vice versa. And voila, you two new surfaces to ride on 'til the next time.
