I've never taken one of these cables apart before, but judging by the visual heft of the knock sensor assembly itself, I'd bet that its probably just standard 18AWG (or so) stranded wire inside. One thing I'd check out is to see if you can nail down the location of the break; if there's been some sort of damage at the sensor/cable interface, you might be better off getting a replacement (hate to have it go south after you spend the time on it, only to fail and leave you in the land of detonation).
