Good to drain and refill every year. Best to take rear differential cover off to get all the old fluid out the first time. Get a new gasket before you take off the cover. The drain plug is on the bottom of the trans and I think your year has a 3/8" square plug(my 90 has a 12mm allen). Can be a bear to uncork this puppy, but it will come out. If you do not pull the diff cover and just drain out the bottom, do not refill with 3 qts of oil. this will overfill and the trans seems to shift better when just up to the full line, which will take about 2 1/2 qts.
While there is almost as much debate over trans fluids as motor oil, i switched from non-synth 10w30 motor oil to synthetic, Redline MTL, at 90k and am still fine at almost 280k miles on a 90 900t. The shifting was immediately better in the cold weather. Another good synthetic alternative is Honda synth trans fluid that has been discovered by board posters. If you have GL-4 gear oil(stinks to high heaven), you should not switch to regular 10w30 motor oil. I believe you can safely switch to synthetic MTL or Honda from either GL-4 or 10w30. Some say that flushing with a non-detergent oil is important, but i did not do this.
The synth versus regular debate is on trans longevity not over leaks. Leaks at the front and rear crank seals are the issue that you get when you switch from regular to synth motor oil in the crankcase. I recently heard that synth in the trans may not be as good for the pinion bearing as regular oil. But I have had no problems and it certainly does shift better.
