Use the following equation
(a)Unsprung spring height/(b)spring height when installed under full load =
(c)New height of spring after cutting spring when unsprung/(d)(desired)Height of new spring when installed under load.
You know (a), will know (b) when you remove the spring, and need to figure out how short the spring needs to become under load to give you the new height. Now you plug in and calculate for (c)
(c)=(d)times (a) divided by (b)
To cut a spring, get an oxyacetylene torch, and a large bucket of ice cold salted water with ice cubes in it.
1) Use the equation to calculate desired spring length.
2) Notice how springs have "flattenned" ends where the steel is bent.
3) Measure back from the end of the spring to the bend.
4) mark the spring at the area of desired length.
5) Add to this the distance in 3 to this length and mark
6) Cut at area marked at step 5
7) heat to red/white hot at area 4, bend, and reheat to white hot
8) Plunge into bucket of ice cold salted water.
9) repeat for other side and make damned sure they are within one quater of an inch of eachother.
10) Crack open a bear and show your friends just how cool you and your car now are.
This method guarantees Saab spring handling and control, as you are using Saab springs. They will if anything get slightly firmer (5-10%). You will need to re-align the car, as caster and camber will slightly shift because the car's spindle is now closer to the hood.
