the most obvious sign would be pressure in your system when there should not be.. is there pressure there when the car has been stood overnight for example.. or when the tempt hasnt fully warmed up.. pull the cap and check..

basically apart from a small amount of pressure due to the expansion of the coolent as it warms up your system should not have any noticable pressure in it unless the water temp goes past the halfway mark on the gauge..

if u have a small leak between cylinder and waterways u will have the full 15 psi there all the time.. there wont be any boiling over or anything when u pull the cap but there will be a noticable hissing pressure release..

the boiling over when u pull the cap only occurs when the water temp is over normal atmospheric boiling point.. this is well up on the gauge.. probably at least 3/4 up..

the most obvious sign thow is pressure still there in the morning when everything has cooled down.. as there will be if the rest of your system is leak free except for the pressure leak between cylinder and waterways..

compression or leak-down tests will not show up this type of leak thow a sniffer test probably will.. i think all saab gaskets go this way before they really blow..
