setting the cams is very simple but deceptive somtimes..

start by setting it to tdc #1 compression stroke before teardown. this will occur when the lobes are up and flywheel is at the 0 mark. wire brush it and apply a dab of white fingernail polish at 0. two dabs at timing point ( i use 15deg so that i can set timing +-1 easily). put a ratchet on the crank pully and put your hand over the #1 plug ( pull them all first of course. clean cavity b4 you do.) you will feel the compression building as you get close. then continue to rotate into tdc as marked. if you overshoot do it again. rotate only in the right direction. after tdc is set pull and reset the tensioner. screw back in lightly a few turns. now verify that the v on the cam gear meets the ccw most side of the cap groove. if not then you have to reset it. lock the cams with a spanner and remove the gears. then pull the lower chain taut and reset the exhaust side gear it should be close, snug the bolt ( use a gun brush and spray cleaner to clean the thread bores. a dropped gear will destroy the engine in milliseconds, clean the bolts too of course) .now keep the chain tight and mount the intake gear with chain and tightne the tensioner. rotate engine two full turns and check alignment. use thread locker and torque to spec ( 40??) lock the cams with spanner, NOT the chain.

others can correct where i am off but it is from old memory...me AND the memory are old :).

you'll only do it wrong once!:)
