Boost reduced when gauge into red - normal?

I have just bought a 900 Aero from 1985. I think it is a 1986-model, though - came off the line late '85... Anyway, during hard acceleration, the boost is cut off (almost feels like wheelspin) when the Turbo/APC-gauge enters the red area. Is this normal? There's plenty boost, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the Turbo, but I was wondering if it could be a faulty full-throttle switch...?
