normal "pitting" under head gasket on 90T engine?

All,
Doing my first headgasket. I've got the head off the block and am cleaning things up before I install the new Elring gasket. FWIW the gasket had not blown, I just had the engine out for pinion bearings (and too much else) and decided to go ahead and replace the head gasket since the engine had 130K on it with I presume the original gasket.
OK, the head surface is smooth other than "micro pitting" which seems to be exclusively under the footprint of the metal ring which immediately surrounds the piston/combustion chamber. That is, the ring immediately in contact nearest combustion. The only small pits on the entire head surface occur in this area, I think typical to all 4 holes.
Is this common? Will it negatively affect the life of the new gasket if these are not machined out? They are very light, I would say just enough to catch your finger nail on.
I am hoping not to have to take the head to a machine shop for a cut since this means total disassembly.
Please advise!
