I had airlifts in my 84 900T and loved them...once they're in they're going nowhere! I wouldn't worry about the top spacer. Leave about 10psi in the bags at all times. I'm still irritated I forgot to remove them when I traded the wrecked car to some Puerto Rican friends who owned a body shop for a paint job on my wife's car...
I ran the hoses into the trunk and then installed a threaded schrader valve (get the kind used for alloy wheels, maybe $1.98) through the trunk down under the car so I could pump up the airlifts with a compressor at the gas station from the OUTSIDE of the car. Sure I could have left the nipple inside but then I'd have to unload the car to get to the thing when I figured I'd want to set the ride height with the car loaded!
You could also set up an electric compressor with a switch on the dash or somewhere or a linkage to a switch to maintain a given ride height, but that's probably a little much.
