You're absolutely right, no engine pull reqired for lower control arms or passenger side upper control arm (that's the one I replaced but misreported as a lower arm) According to the manual, the driver's side upper does require an engine pull, and I haven't had to do that one.
I now have had a good look, and all control arms are intact. I'm quite puzzled, however by how and why the tripod pulled out of the inner driver when engine mounts seem OK. Only damage seems to be to the inner driver cup - one of the "slots" has been breached to the outside, and that's where the tripod got out, I guess (I sure would like to know why!). I'll replace that one with the corresponding part of my old departed 1977 EMS.
