Humming Noise at 25 MPH+ on '84 900

My 1984 non-turbo 900 now makes a very noticable hum which becomes noticeable at about 25 MPH and steadily gets louder with higher speed. It only makes this noise when I am driving straight or veering left. It makes this noise independently of engine speed or what gear I am in. By the way, I have a manual 5-speed if that makes any difference.
There is one particular sweeping left turn on the regualr route I drive to get into town that I was in the habit of taking at 65 MPH with my foot to the floor in fourth gear, and in the middle of this turn was a bumb that the car negotiated with aplomb so I would always do it for my own amusement and to show others what the car was capable of. I think this is why it doesn't make the noise when I am veering right. Since this noise started I have been taking it easy around that turn.
Thus far it doesn't seem to have effected the driveability of the car, either in a straight line or in turns, but I have visions of a wheel falling off or something else horrible happening. I would appreciate any information as to what might be causing this sound and what I can do to fix it.
