I really don't like using the extension of the tensioner as a measure of chain wear. The best way to check chain wear is to, well, inspect the chain for wear. How do the links look? How do the cam sprockets look? With the valve cover off, turn the engine to TDC for cylinder #1. Check the alignment marks on the cam versus the marks on the bearing blocks. If the marks align well, the chain isn't worn. If the alignment is off, then the chain is worn.
Chains don't stretch, but they do get longer. As the link pins and holes wear, the holes get bigger and the pins get smaller. This extra few thousands of an inch build up over the lenght of the chain, and it gets longer. So misalignment of the marks is the best indicator of chain wear, along with good-old visual inspection.
