charge it overnight, let it rest for one hour, then measure the voltage across the terminals as you discharge it at 250 amps or so...you'll need a load bank or a load tester, generally the load testers are sold for around $30.
It's good to have one because you can then load test your batteries once a year and either replace them or get a new one under warranty before the battery dies in your car in East B#$F$%k Iowa some dark and stormy night.
As far as batteries, CR had the Sears Diehard Weatherhandler (South) top rated.
It's funny, the AC Delco batteries got the worst ratings in CR for their life test...but I've used AC Delco batteries in my 87 900T since I got it in 92 or thereabouts...the first one lasted about 6 years to 98 and the current one is in there now...I was so happy with it/them that I didn't bother to replace the volvo's battery with a genuine volvo battery (that died in 4 years, no warranty thankyouverymuchvolvoNA) and I just slapped in a Delco.
You pays your money and takes your chances, but the Delco worked for me and cost about $45 or so at Costco.
