My experience with studded tires ONLY on the front is that, when you REALLY need to slow/stop in icy/snowy conditions, the front studds grab and the rear-end swings around to pass you. Either bite the bullet and put studded tires at all four corners or just put your new tires with studs on the BACK. The majority of braking is done while going in a forward motion, so the better gripping studs in back will keep you headed in the correct direction.
