It's my understanding that even if you do set the fuel distr air fuel mixture screw back to a more lean position at idle, the O2 sensor will adjust accordingly while driving and set the modulator valve pulse ratio that much more rich. Too lean and it idles roughly and cold start-up is difficult. Too rich and you're just wasting fuel, plus aging your cat convertor and O2 sensor that much sooner.
A properly tuned and maintained engine, plus regular O2 sensor replacement is the best way to get good gas milage. Then there's driving slower, going easy on the accelerator, driving on flat land with few start and stops. There is only one cheap trick I'd consider doing, and if I didn't do all that much highway driving - that is to set the ignition timing to a more advanced position. This will give you slightly better response (and better gas milage) at the lower end of the engine response curve, but would suffer at higher speeds. For a few hundred dollars US you could buy an ignition control system that can program your timing and ECU control for optimum fuel efficiency.
