but it doesn't have ABS. My car also has a check engine light that isn't used because its an 8 valve. My theory is this: ABS took many years to develop. At some point in the design process the engineers realized that they would need some warning indicator in the dash. Logic would dictate that it would be easier for production lines to ramp up earlier for necessary components for a few reasons: 1. you have the parts when you need them. 2. The needed parts will be available for prototypes. 3. Get manufacturing bugs out of the system early.
Having said that, it would be inefficient to run to series of the same component; knowing that older style would soon be obsolete. And, knowing that the newer one is backwards compatable.
I have absolutely no solid proof to back this hypothesis up. Other than the fact that I am employed by the largest Scandinavian telecom firm in the world, and I see this type of business logic applied every day.
