The following is a list of people I need to thank for material and other support after my recent transmission swap. At times I thought I could not finish and would be out a car (the AT was pretty much dead anyway) but now it's all working well.
First and above all else: Jon S. For those of you who don't know the guy, he's the reason I got the project done. I still did most of the work, but a pointer here and words of advice there were enough to make a tremendous difference. I hope you enjoy your new penetrating oil since you liked it so much.
Mother makes the list, for putting up with me not being around even though I'm supposed to spend time with my family instead of even more time with my car when I'm home on break. She also gets honorable mention because she put up with me coming home reeking of parts cleaner and penetrating oil and gasoline and doused in CV grease up to my mid-forearms, and never really being sure of when I'd be done until it was finished. I also thank you for making the car last as long as it did. I promise I will be home more often on my next break, except for the occasional errand to work or watch trains as usual.
Next in line is the father, who helped with the labor (especially reassembly and those countless two-person jobs.) For those of you considering the transmission swap (upgrade!) it is true that two people can accomplish the work in a third of the time. I should not forget the bags of Fritos and Vernors (mmmmm! Saab Va Va Voom!) and transportation to the site. You also had other things to do that week.
Htom helped me on one day, and as I expected, you didn't swing a wrench all that much but there's always conversation. I'll see you this weekend for our seat party. If you want a really wierd homemade drum pedal, I'll give you the fat-assed brake pedal from the slushbox before I recycle it.
Dean: I thank you for keeping the donor car and hoist around until I could buy it. You will be getting a couple of presents too. Next time you do this, I need to teach you how to align the 900 shifter and linkage.
Jim and Mark J (Saabnetters): kind words of encouragement when I still didn't know if I wanted to do it or not. Be proud of your 207k mileage.
And finally, there are Saab engineers. No matter how many times I heard a certain member of my family complain about how difficult it is to access the air cleaner on an 8V 900 with the metering body in the way, I knew there was a reason for it. The reason is that a complete level 2 shadetree mechanic can disassemble everything but the brakes in front of the firewall to pull his own engine with simple hand tools and make up for some lazy or handicapped owner's decision to buy a three speed automatic and live to talk about it. There were NO STUCK BOLTS or other fasteners. The 7 mm screws holding the bumper extensions to the cover still turned for pete's sake! The best part was that everything went back together right the first time! I couldn't believe it. Turn the key on three times to prime the fuel system. Start car, car immediately dies. Start car again, car jumps to life. Now that's science. Plus, now that all that AC hardware (a. k. a. dead weight) is gone, it's simple to reach the alternator belts and heater/lower rad hose connections.
I hope everyone enjoys my ranting here. If not, there are other posts to read. I now have to come up with a suitable way to put the detatched automatic shift "lever" on display in my back window. Burning the thing does not do it justice.
Drive safely. Efficiency is nice, too.
