You want 3 watt bulbs for the instument cluster general lighting, which are "available" at parts chains. Get the ones that are the same size and shape as garden variety 5 watt #194's but only w watt. Out of stock problems plague these stores, so you might have to try a couple(Saab or BMW dealers have them, too). The warning light bulbs are physically smaller 2 watt bulbs (except for a 3 watt alternator bulb).
Note that there are two rheostats, one for the gauge cluster and one for the rest of the dash. Wiggle these first in case they are stuck on dirty/dead spots. The inst. cluster reostat normally lasts forever, but the larger dash panel rheostat is flaky.
If all the lights are out for the rest of the dash, I would definitely suspect the larger rheostat on your right. Wiggle and turn it back an forth, which might fix things. If nothing, you can get to this rheostat without removing dash insert. All the push switches can be pulled out with small screwdrivers used like chopsticks on either side of the switch. You then take the nut off the front of the rheostat shaft and can fish the damn thing out through the switch holes. Jump the hot lead and the wire that goes to the instruments together(not the ground or you'll pop a fuse). If the lights come on, either replace the rheostat or bypass the rheostat and run at max all the time. BTW max is a joke. I think the Swedes designed the interior lighting during winter when their eyes had adjusted to 24 hours of darkness.
Switch lights are in the back of the switches and easily replaced. If the heating control lights are out, you also can replace these without pulling the dash. They are small 2 watt bulbs. The upper one for the fan control can be accessed through the radio hole...pull radio and the cage supporting it. The lower one is a bear and is just above the lighter towards the steering wheel. you can get to it by carefully reaching though the radio hole and through a morass of wires and hoses. A good work light down the speaker hole and a small mirror will help. Second time you do this is much easier ;-))
