I have also recently purchased a 1992 900S 5 spd. In relation to your question about the manual transmissions, the best advice I can give to you is to get on an incline, and back the car up it. My car, on even the slightest inclines, would pop out of reverse every three to four feet....Not a good thing for someone with a 30-40 foot inclined driveway. Anyway, if it pops out, take it to a Saab mechanic and have him check it out BEFORE you buy the car. It turned out that mine only needed a spring to be replaced in the tranny for about $200, but if it had gone any longer like this, it would have been an $1100 repair bill....Almost 1/4 what the car is worth. If the car is in good condition and the price is right, jump on it. I now only wish I had bought a Turbo ;)
