You have a loose, or cracked connector--- try removing the EQ/amp from the DIN slot while still powered up, and jiggle the cables to see if you can find the faulty one.
I'm not sure if the '88 has the same configuration as my '87, but I had a similar problem, except it was the driver's side cutting out. I traced it to a bad cable connection on the EQ--- from the head unit there are two cables w/ DIN plugs, one goes into the EQ, the other into the amp behind the EQ. The problem was the actual cable connector on the board inside the EQ, but I had to take the EQ apart to get to it.
It could be any of these connectors or cables--- after 14 years even solder joints start to crack...
