say till your fan cuts in.. it should get hot enough to roast u thermostat or no thermostat.. leave it idling for half an hour then u will know.. fitting a new winter stat wont do any harm but if no air is going thru the rad such as when the car is stopped without the fan running things should still get hot enough to work your heater..
simple logic.. stat is open.. water goes thru rad.. water gets cooled going thru rad by air blowing thru rad.. no air blowing thru rad cos car is stood water dont get cooled thermostat open or not.. heater should work.. even if the stat has stuck open..
just a test to see if your heater is working thats all.. u can also feel the top hose to see if its warm when it shouldnt be.. i could also say just feel how hot the rad and hoses feel in general.. that is if u have any idea how hot they should feel when your car is running somewhere near its correct operating temperature.. its not a bad thing to learn how hot hot is without having to rely on a temp gauge which could after all be faulty just like your heater could..
for the record my heater puts out plenty of heat with the gauge no more than 20% off the bottom which is its normal winter cruising point with a working stat.. enough for me to turn it right down..
but if your car really is running too cool the stat not doing its job is the only thing that can cause it.. as for the heater not working well there are other factors..
