grounds. Seems to be an epidemic of them and this time of year it gets worse, winter, salt, corrosion. Look carefully at the engine earthing point...a big (2" square or so) area around the intake manifold, there may be a bracket or somesuch, where 10 or more grounds come together and are connected to the earthing bracket. Yes, there are also three or four other such earthing points on the body but I'd have to look at the manual to find the hidden ones.
The wire insulation may be breaking down, eco friendly and all, or just subject to too much heat or environmental contamination or oil or grease...look for crumbling insulation on the ground wires. Also, there may be corrosion up the wire from the connector terminals at the earthing point 1/4 inch or so.
I had a similar problem on my 87 900T 4-5 years ago...cost me a new ecu and six months later the problem returned...the repair shop finally traced it down to bad grounds. All of the wires to that earthing point had to be cut back 1" to fresh copper, tinned with a soldering gun, reterminated, and reattached. No problems since.
