just learn to find that magic "feel right" life is full of nuts and bolts that need tightening and one dosnt always have the torque setting for each one.. anders tale can be read two ways.. the bolt was over-tightened due to no use of a torque wrench and snapped.. (not very likely) or the bolt was weak and could not stand the proper torque being applied to it and snapped.. (very likely).. but he could "feel" it wasnt right and now would stop as opposed to keeping going and snap the bugger..
one problem with torque wrenches is that they are too long to get that "feel" with small fixings.. and that on older cars a lot of the bolts and threads might be slightly weak and require a little less than the recommended torque.. threaded ally components being prone to this problem.. simply wadeing in and useing the recommended "as new" torque for everything is not a good idea..
i just say learn that "feel" and also try and translate in your own mind what a particular foot pound reading actually means without having to resort to a bloody great awkward torque wrench every time.. as a general rule most folks over-tighten things and open ended wrenches come in the various lengths they do for a very good reasons.. use and learn a little common sense as opposed to relying on having a manual and the automatic use of a torque wrench..
as i say.. life is full of things held together with nuts.. bolts.. and scews of one kind or another.. learning how tight "tight enough" is.. will come in usefull somewhere down the line..
treat torque settings more as a recommendation rather than as a written in stone absolute that must be obeyed exactly else disaster will happen exact science.. there is a lot more lee-way than some would have u believe.. and above all learn not to tighten things any more than u have to..
i have a friend who has a bike shop.. when he lets his "helper" do a job.. he always checks the work by giving the nuts and bolts a little tweak with the torque wrench in his head.. he dosnt have a real one.. if he moves one he tells his helper off for not doing the job right.. he he he.. course the helper knows the game and always over-tightens everything in the first place to prevent this happening.. u have to laff.. he he he
