1) My pops was a PE. A full way bridge is what he called 4 way bridge. But lets not get caught up in terminology....
2) Saab specs say regulator may go down to a certain degree (12.6?). So as your theory is correct mostly, you need to defer to Saab's engineers. If I am off on the # I apologize, but these things do fall on current draw.
3) Unless brushes are very short and worn, they should be self cleaning, though as you say dirt will occassionally screw things up.
4) When engine idles too slowly, VR cannot compensate. That is a common problem, especially in GM cars. If he is idling below 700RPM, VR may not be able to compensate. There is a minimum speed tolerance.
5) Alternators are designed for a maximum output. Engineers frequently skimp here. If you run the radio, A/C, rear defogger, fogs, and high beams while openning a window you will probably overcome the engineered upper tolerances at idle speeds, especially if you are idling a bit low. Rev the engine and you will make up the difference, but only up to a point. A 100 amp alt will not be able to put out 300 amps, for example, even at 6000 RPM with a great VR. When you have insufficient current from the alternator the car draws from the battery to make up the difference. This eventually kills the battery's reserve.
