some of the original GM airbags. These were test units, and were inferior to what was offered in their cars as option and later as standard items. They were put in cars like El Dorado Cadillacs and no one was told. Many of the cars were then sold as used cars up to 2 decades later. Some of those 1, 2 and 3 decade old cars were then involved in brutally serious head on collisions where no one should have lived. What they found was that people were living and even walking away BECAUSE the supposedly old airbag worked flawlessly. The survivors were just as amazed as GM execs and the emergency workers at the scenes of the accidents. An airbag is a plastic sealed unit. Essentially it is a time capsule. Only the electrical connections are available to the effects of aging, and those seem to be working well in at least some of the cases. I would rather have those odds of perhaps being saved vs. perhaps being dead.
Saying something has an expiration date has more to do with lawyers and less to do with actual expiration. Do you really think that the aspirin in your fridge or the calcium tablets you take for indigestion go bad? How can an inorganic compund like calcium carbinate in a plastic bottle go bad in 2 years? Plastic is almost eternal, and the inner explosive stuff in the bags is saturated with water absorbing dust that will keep it dry almost forever unless someone tears the bag's outer AND inner seal.
Finally, call your insurance company but don't give your name! Record the conversation if you are in a state where that is legal. If you are silly enough to give your name, insist that they send you a written letter saying it is OK to disconnect, or just say you won't do it.
Russel, You seem to be a great guy with alot of good info, but occasionally you give advice and say things that are less main stream. It is as if these statements are more based on personal preference than documentation, such as the helicopter turbo bearing stuff AND not changing your motor oil for 25k miles at a clip AND refusing to drive a Saab turbo because turbo bearing fail despite the fact that there is awesome documentation that the turbos last for 170-200k+ trouble free miles. As a scientist and physician this worries me. I think you are a good guy, but sometimes you say some stuff that is not widely accepted. I don't want this to turn into a blood-feud, as I really do think you are an OK person. I just don't know where you are coming from sometimes.
