ECU compatibility in '85 16v Turbo

I've recently rescued a UK 1985 3dr 16V turbo from the breakers: the bodywork and paint was excellent and the car was complete apart from not having an ECU under the RHS carpet footwell.
I have borrowed a couple of ECU's, both Bosch, one is out of an '89 9000 and has the numbers 0 280 000 555 and 8 975 294 on it. The other is unknown year and has the numbers 0 280 000 574 and 9 114 711.
The engine runs with both, it has spark at all 4 plugs, compression is 200psi on #1, 190 on #2, 170 on #3 and 190 on #4 cylinder. Until yesterday everytime I took the plugs out they were all wet and black. Yesterday they were all just black and sooty. The engine sounds like it is only running on 3 cylinders and doesn't want to idle (too lumpy), yet taking each plug lead off one by one didn't make any difference. The plug leads are going to the correct plugs, yet the distributor is 180 degrees different to the '89 16v non turbo I have..... The rotor turns anticlockwise when looking at the front of the car.
I haven't checked if an injector is sticking but I was wondering if the ECU's were compatible with this year of car...
Anyone know?
Cheers
Fraser
