Unfortunately since you've got an 8v car you're not going to have much luck with your plan. Remember the air filter in the 8v is built into the fuel distributor housing, so you can't really expose it without risking damage to the fuel distributor.
Two things that do work are rotating the air filter housing about 100 degrees and fitting a 16v-style snorkel so it sucks air from the wheel well. You could also probably design a simple ram-air type intake to suck air from the lower front airdam. The problem with either of these plans, however, is that you will have to defeat the thermostatic air intake - the little flap that grabs air from the exhaust side of the engine bay when things are cold. In some states you won't pass inspection/emissions without it - California, I happen to know, is one of them. :)
If you're looking to improve the performance of your car, I'd suggest starting out by installing an intercooler from a 16v. That will do worlds better than any cold-air intake.
