Won't Idle

Hi Everyone,
My '87 900 manual won't idle. It runs fine, but when I take my foot off the accelerator, the idle drops, the car chugs a couple of times at stall rpm, then dies. The problem started suddenly - it worked fine one time I started it, it did this the next time I started it. There were no warning signs that I can recall. The only problem it has, other than a general lack of power, is a pesky additional drop in power between 2000 and 2500 rpm.
I searched the Saabnet archives, but idling is such a frequent issue with older Saabs that the search returned thousands of postings. And I'd use my repair manual as a source for ideas but it's 600km away, so it's not very handy.
If it helps narrow down the possibilities, my brother attached a smoke machine to the engine and there are no apparent vacuum leaks. Any other ideas? I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thank you,
Chris Guyer
