Yes, it does strip paint. I have one of those body repair manuals that recommends this to clean all traces of paint and dirt from metal. I stumbled across a can of it at a body/paint supply store and bought it just for the hell of it. Very powerful solvent that will take most anything off, I think that it was used to remove cosmoline from plane parts and to strip the metal down prior to painting. It's clear and thin, not like the gel paint strippers, which also will probably work just fine.
It's in a plain metal gallon can like paint thinner. I love it for cleaning greasy stuff that engine degreaser or brake cleaner won't touch. I wear special yellow chemical gloves when I use it and also use it outside. Fumes...whew. I hate to think of the plant where they make it superfund site waiting to happen!
