my non-SPG driver side door has a sticker that says "aero" on it. it's a white car.
vin number can't identify spg cuz none of the digits indicate trim level. that's why you have to contact saab.
some clues:
if the sun visor tire info says use only VR rated tires, it's an spg.
if the sticker at the gas cap says "use premium unleaded fuel only," it's an spg.
for '90 models only: if you are *certain* that the turbo has never been changed, then look to see which make it is: if garrett t3, not an spg. if mitsubishi teo5, then, yes, spg.
other clues but not definitive: for 90/91 only, distributor bosch number ends w/010. starting in 88?? or 89?? (whenever spg got the lowered suspension), look for silver or gold paint marks on the front springs, which indicate lower, stiffer spg springs.
look on hatch where the "900 Turbo" badges are located on standard 900t cars. if you look closely and from varying angles, you should be able to tell if someone has removed them from a 900t.
imho, an spg is just a fancy trim package. they are sharp looking and i'd love to buy the beryl green '91 for sale for $8k in my town, but if you are after performance, some years they had same hp as non-spgs (but were slightly heavier), other years they had only marginally more hp. a c900t can be made as fast as an spg for about $2 in resistors and a pressure regulator off an n/a motor.
people selling them at ridiculously high prices (like 8k) are counting on others who also believe that they are super exclusive. blue book value for this trim package is only several hundred dollars higher than a standard 900t. and, where saabs are popular, they are all over the place. case in point: in the past 4 days, i've seen two spgs, and today - within 20 minutes and only blocks of each other - i saw two convertibles with spg paneling/wheels (not "real" spgs, whatever that means). one was monte carlo yellow (nice...).
