I got a great deal ($500) on an 85'900T 3dr w/100k. Humor me while I describe it. The car isn't perfect - but no rust or dash cracks (none!). I'ts red w/tan cloth (though no rips/tears, I'm shopping for dk grey interior in gd shape - wish me luck)and has one repainted quater pannel(nyc car). New battery & 02 sens. & partial exh., rblt. ps rack, alt. & F. calipers (less than 3k mi on everything!) It used to be an automatic - but prev. owner pd. $1700 for 5spd conversion 2yrs ago @ 96k mi. 5spd alleged to be rblt. but I suspect its used (waiting on call back from shop that did the work).Turbo pulls great, motor sounds nice, and I got 35mpg (!)driving the car 150mi home (CT to RI) and I was into the red on the boost gauge a couple of times too! The fellow I got the car from has close to $4K in recpts over the last 2yrs. and when the headgasket started leaking reciently he threw in the towel (lucky me!). There's coolant leaking from underneath the exh. man. by the dist. and no traces in the oil whatsoever. I poured in a bottle of "bars leaks" before driving her home, and that has slowed the leak to a trickle. I've still got my 83'900 beater to drive so I don't plan on fooling with the 85'T untill either spring arrives, or the drivers seat falls through the floor on my 83'rustbucket, whichever happens first.
OK - very sorry about the novel,... so when yank the head, should I slap in a new timimg chain/tensioners? How about performance mods.? I plan on tweaking things in the near future and don't know what (if any) work I can do when I have the head off that will save me having to take it off again later on. I have a lot of experience w/8v's having had one for 15yrs (it's going to hurt to part with the poor thing) but I appreciate any/all input/advice regarding my 'new' 16v turbo.
