Bob Sinclair (head of Saab NA at the time) strong-armed the Swedes into making the ragtop once Saab came out with the 900 2-door....couldn't make a convertible out of the hatchback. There were too many 2-doors being built and Saab wanted to dump them on the U.S. market. Sinclair did not originally want them because this would have watered-down the Saab image that he was trying to cultivate, so, he asked if they could be ordered with turbos, upscale interiors, etc. and was told that they could. Then he chimed in that he also wanted these 2-doors to have a folding roof. That's when hell broke loose, but, a prototype was built and was very well-received at Geneva. American Sunroof Company (ASC) built the prototype on an '82 or '83 900 coupe and it was shown to the world at the '83 Geneva auto show. The prototype was white with a burgundy interior.
When given the green light, it was introduced for sale in the '86 model year. Each U.S. dealer was given a supply of one. Some were available to the European market, but, very few. This car was developed and built primarily with the U.S. market in mind. All '86s were "Edwardian" Grey , had turbos, and nearly all were automatics. The '87 model year stepped-up production and you could also now get one in "Cherry Red". I believe that "Cirrus" White and "Black" were available starting in the '88 model year.
The U.S. market did get the 2-door coupes for the '85 and '86 model years. Although they are scarce, they're not really worth any premium over any other mid-80s Saab.
