The '95-'96 engines were initially hated by mechanics, so I am told by my mechanic. Also, the first year's convertible tops were a disaster and needed to be changed back from the crappy computer style to the more reliable hydraulic type. STAY AWAY from a computerized top. If it stops working it will be a disaster to fix. Also, if you get into an accident it is almost impossible to get the cars top to re-align and work properly, (even more so over a regular convertible).
I own an '88 convertible, and I love it. The newer converts have a less comfortable/less solid drive feeling, much less length, much less width, and less aggressive handling. When you go to the performance BB, you will see that everyone there with a 95 or up is looking for better sway bars and the like because they are looking for a 900c (classic) feeling. Many even compare their drive feelings to the old 900c. We here are more interested in a lowered spring LOOK and less interested in great handling because our cars already handle well. That is not to say they are perfect, just much much better.
As far as reliability, I prefer the 900c. So does my Saab mechanic. I remember when the 900NG and the 9.3's and the 9.5's came out he told me to stay away because of all kinds of probs. Many probs have been fixed but I still don't trust 'em. There will be some or many who will disagree, but I have seen bizarre engine stuff with the new Saabs.
As far as parts, 900c parts are cheaper. My last 900c lasted me faithfully and would still be running if it hadn't let its stupid pilot drive it in front of a 1/2 ton truck. Even after that it was so strong that I walked away uninjured and was able to take the engine out because it and the tranny survived and are still in great shape after a realy hard hit to the engine bay.
Finally, I prefer a Saab that looks like a Saab. The new cars look too small and too much like every other car out there.
