what should I do?...advice needed!

I am sorry this is so long but I am a C900 newbie and am quite confused. I have a 1990 900 Turbo automatic that has 78,000 miles that I bought 4 months ago and have put 3000 miles on it. It hasn't given me any problems until I brought it to my mechanic today and he said that it needs an exhaust(leaking from front pipe) and will also need a cat. convertor because they are welded together. At first he quoted $1100 for the job and when I told him I would look elsewhere, he called back and told me he could do it for half that. He also told me that he found balljoint and tie rod ends that had play and would need replacing($675). So my question is this, even though the transmission is in good working order right now and fluids have been changed at regular intervals, do I want to start pouring money into this Saab when the automatic tranny could go at any given time and cost a few grand to replace? Or would it make more sense to sell it while it is working well and find a 900S with a manual trans with relatively low mileage that will be more reliable? What would be a fair price to sell it at? Any help would be much appreciated!
