Paul,
As a starting point, I would recommend pulling the fault/trouble codes from the LH Jetronic computer (brain) on your '89 900. The 1987 uses an older fuel injection system (be it a 16V Turbo or 8V, neither '87 will allow code retrieval).
There are several posts on how to retrieve the codes. On a 1989 900 (whether Turbo or not), you can get the fuel injection computer to flash the check engine light in a series of codes. I think it can store 3-4 codes.
This is done by using a jumper wire at the 10-pin connector (of which only 2 or 3 pins are actually used) located under the rear seat of sedans & 3 door models (or next to shifter on convertibles).
The Townsend Imports' site has a lot of info on this topic, as does the FAQ 900 section on the SAABNET homepage and the Swedish Wrench website, which I'll link below.
