Going nuts - need some knowledge on key cylinder (long)

I managed to get my key cylinder out to figure out what is going on with it. I did a post mortem and found to tiny pieces of metal at the bottom of the
cylinder. I figured they were a part of the cylinder that broke.
While reading the Good Book of Bently (saw that on the board today) on how to install a new one I find that I'm supposed to make sure "the tooth segment driver pins in the gear lever housing are in the correct position to accept the lock barrel."
I look in what I think is the gear lever housing and it looks like the two pieces could have come out of the "socket" for the lock cylinder. I figure I'm in deep trouble now. I proabably have a perfectly good lock and a bad gear lever housing.
Does anyone have a description of what the bottom of the socket that holds the cylinder is supposed to look like? I have to metal pieces about that look like teeth, maybe about 2mm long. Are they supposed to be at the bottom of the socket? Do I have to replace the whole thing?
I'm ready to shoot my Saab. (just finished replacing tranny but I cant start the ##$%^@#$ car to see if I did it right!)
