Depends on several things, most important of which - in my opinion, anyway - is how you feel about the car. If it's been troublefree this long and you enjoy driving it - you really like the car a lot - then I'd say have the tranny rebuilt. Another consideration is that saabs can last quite a long time when properly maintained. 144k miles isn't that high compared to other saabs (I had a 99 with well over 300k miles on it before I sold it). You could reasonably expect to go another 100k. Also think about the cost to buy another car. You likely own your car outright by now, so a new one will saddle you with payments. You will, on the other hand, have a vehicle that will be more reliable, under warranty, etc. If you buy a used car, you've just replaced an otherwise decent vehicle whose complete history and deficiencies are well known with one whose history is unknown - you know the care your own car has been given, how you drive the car, etc. This is a good position to be in, in my opinion; I'd prefer to know what's been going on rather than gamble with another vehicle (though I suppose it's reasonable to expect a much newer car to be more reliable).

You mentioned having to swap out just several parts. Do you follow the recommended services religiously, e.g., oil/coolant/brake fluid changes, 30k 60k 90k maintenance schedules, etc.? If you have taken good care of the car, had the fluids changed regularly, etc., then I'd say that's another reason to keep it. If, on the other hand, you've been neglectful, then Murphy's law might bite you in the butt soon after you get the gearbox rebuilt. *Any* car that's coming up on ten years that hasn't received regular maintenance is likely to start having problems.

One last consideration is the head gasket on your car. Your year apparently has had problems with head gaskets. If you decide to have the tranny rebuilt, and you intend to keep the car a while, you may want to consider having a new head gasket put on when they do the tranny. Ask your mechanic what the cost would be if done @ the same time as tranny.

0.02 to ponder...
