take a voltometer, start your car, touch one end of the voltometer to the positive battery cable and the other end to the negative.
it should read 14v. any more than 14v running through your car will start causing stuff to blow.
i had a voltage regulator go out on me not too long ago and my alternator was outputting 17v. it blew both my headlights and overcharged my battery to the point of it leaking. i put a new voltage regulator in and checked the voltage again. it read 14v and i haven't had any problems since.
