If the balljoint is that shot, i'd replace it. You don't want wone breaking on you while undersay.
A lower joint is very easy, because you don't even need to remove the axle nut or mess with the axle shaft. Just jack up the car and pull the wheel, undo the lower shock mount. Remove the bolts holding the joint in the control arm. If you turn the steering wheel full left, you can loosen the balljoint spindle nut and whack the spindle eye with a hammer. The joint will pop out and you can pull the lower control arm down so the balljoint can be pulled out. I did one on Saturday in 30 minutes start to finish. I used spacers between the upper control arm and the body so I could check the joints first, but if you know the lower one is bad, i don't think you even have to use spacers.
