Nothing sound related would surprise me in cold weather. Yeah, that release bearing is pretty much exposed at all times. It's a simple ring of ball bearings sitting in a bed of grease which over time can accumulate moisture or dry out. When I purchased my first used 900 I was concerned when I heard that bearing. I thought it was faulty until a mechanic told me that sound was normal. A new bearing might be slightly less noisy, but no less effective. Cold startup on any car will always be that much more noisy until all the oil and grease has begun doing their job. Car, truck, V8 or 4 cyl, I remember all of them sounding "rough" starting in the winter months.
