'89 900 non turbo ignition woes.(i'm losing my mind)

i have an 89 900 non turbo with the integrated coil/ignition amplifier. the car will start and run for ~1min and then it kills and won't start again. if i come back the next morning if fires right up again for a minute. i have ruled out a fuel problem(new fuel pump, pressure regulator and filter;troubleshot the system using the bentley book as well).
so i used the bentley guide to troubleshoot the ignition system and found the knock sensor was bad(part on the way) and when i got to the igition amplifier it tested faulty as well. i sent away for a used ignition amplifier and when i installed it, the car started right up and ran for 30-40 minutes. then it started sparking intermittently(used a timing light) and it wouldn't run consitently. i tested the new/used ignition amplifier and it had the same fault as the original one(no voltage when ignition is first turned on). so i sent that back to the yard and they sent me another one. i installed it this morning and tested FIRST. tested faulty as well. but the car started up and ran for 1 minute.(like with the original amplifier).
how important is the knock sensor in this whole thing? could i really have 3 bad ign. amplifiers or is there another fault somewhere that i can't find.?
my wife is ready to kill me but i have too much pride to take it to a mechanic. thanks for the help.
