Exactly. The brushes go first. And they're easy to replace.
One of the neat things about the backward engine of the C900 is that (for those up in the salt belt) the alternator is away from salt spray, so the windings don't get a chance to corrode and break, as happened to my wife's "Brand H" many years ago) and wet salt generally won't bridge internal connections.
Not to mention that Bosch builds (or built) a pretty good alternator, anyway.
