Get a high temp source of water like your water faucet, a garden hose attachment for your sinks faucet, and spray the thing after soaking in dish detergent for a few minutes. Worked wonders for me. The faucet to garden hose attachements can be bought at any home hardware place like home depot or your neighborhood shoppe. I use a similar device that has both the garden hose attachement but more importantly one that came with a wine making kit and is intended for cleaning out wine bottles. It does a wonderful job. Clean it and set it to dry overnight.
As far as small holes, I found that 3M makes an AWESOME product that no one talks about. It is a clear 3mm thick (1/8 inch for us Americans) plastic with super strong adhessive on the back. You just wash the lense, place this over it, and it covers the holes AND prevents new ones becuase of its thickness. It is super awesome stuff. The only drawback? I am sure that Saab headlight "winshield washers" will scratch it up, so just wash by hand or in a carwash.
