Well, I now have 206,000 miles on the old '83 Saab 900 - base model. It was recently rear-ended, and the body damaged slightly. I got the car fixed, and did a little detailing and restoration work, and it now looks and runs very well. The body shop put a new rear hatch on, and straightend the rear fenders, and put a new bumper cover on the rear bumper. Everything seemed fine for a few months.
Now, the rear end seems to be "sagging". The height of the rear end has dropped maybe an inch or so, and is now visible. I have to point out that I am a musician (drummer), and have been using this car to carry my instrument around almost daily. This necessitates putting a pretty heavy (40 lbs) box near the rear, and filling the rear cabin (rear seats folded down) with all my stuff. I have been travelling around for years like this, and never had a problem. I usually go to Hollywood or Studio City, Ca. from my home in the south bay part of LA daily. It is about 30 - 40 miles, on city streets and freeways. I never had this problem before. Now the rear end has lowered a little bit, and my tailpipe has begun dragging in my driveway and on speed bumps. Even with the car unloaded it still looks a little out of whack. This was not the case immediately after getting the car fixed, but seems to be a gradual occurence.
What could be wrong? Are the springs or shocks shot? Should I be using a stiffer rear shock absorber? Can the rear springs wear out? I must admit that the last three months have seen me using this car very heavily and doing a lot of travelling around to my different jobs.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
John
