Let the car idle for a minute or so, then while looking out toward the back of the car through the open drivers side door, hit the gas. If there is any blue smoke, the turbo could be on the way out- another costly fix.
Also, be sure to listen for any front susp clunking when you drive it. It has four balljoints and they require attention if they make noise (I replaced all four of mine in my first year of ownership- 145K). If possible, have the dealer inspect the front lower control arms as they can crack and break, which leads to all sorts of problems that might include death.
When you get on the gas above 2700rpm or so in third gear or higher, the turbo needle should be in the range of the yellow/red border, maybe an eigth of an inch to either side of it. While under boost, listen and feel for any unusual noises or vibration from the drivetrain. There will be some in any car, but by and large, these cars are pretty smooth under power. When you take your foot off the gas (quickly), feel for any rocking back and forth in the shifter. If its excessive, the motor mount(s) are shot. They cost from $150-$700 for a shop to do, depending on which/how many.
