the little gear-shaped piece is probably the source of your trouble. what happens is it gets worn down a bit after having been in the same position for years; yours is probably a bit flat-sided now, which causes the rough opening/closing.
open the door up and spin the gear piece so a fresh, non-indented surface comes in contact with the hook piece; this should smooth out the action.
after a while, the gear piece will probably find its way back into its old, notched position. just re-adjust it as necessary.
