......there are other 1000ca batteries that won't fit. EXIDE made Sears batteries at that time, so Exide 1000 CCA of correct model should fit. Usually the problem is the exhaust elbow that is in the way, as JustinHIFI adroitly points out. Many batteries with side connecters and upper posts won't fit because the 3/8 inch that is taken up by the side connecters is too much and forces the battery into the exhaust elbow with no space for the heat shield. Same battery without the side connecter is OK. Do not grind the side connecters off yourself as that will release acid and destroy the battery and void the warrantee. Just search carefully and find the right one without the side connecters.
Another way to avoid this is to move battery to the trunk and use a gel battery.
Finally, CCA is affected by temperature. If you use a block heater, consider a battery warmer too.
