Self healing cylinder
Recently I mentioned a leaking slave cylinder (nothing holding up the clutch pedal).
Funny thing was, by the time my mechanic got around to looking at it, the problem went away.
The problem happened right at the peak (or should I say valley) of the cold spell (about a month) that we had here in the N.E.
When it came time to look at it, the weather had warmed up into the 30F+ range, and the cylinder now holds pressure. The clutch works!
That was 2 weeks ago, and its still holding fine.
My mechanic wondered if there had been a slow leak that had never been noticed, and finally showed catastrophic results when teh reservoir had fully drained.
Now, I thought that the brake fluid warning light would come on way before a completely empty reservoir.
Another thing: I still had brakes, and not just residual - with the engine running I had fully functional brakes (I had to move the car out to the street, they worked fine, even with an empty reservoir (absolutely no fluid visible, at least before I refilled it.
I should note that refilling the reservoir didn't restore the clutch immediately.
Now, the clutch has been fine for over a week, and there is no visible sign of leakage.
My mechanic seems to say: if it's not broke, don't fix it.
I'm trying to think of another failure mode that would explain the catastrophic loss of fluid, yet explain why it doesn't leak anymore.
Any ideas?
