......an '85 SPG that was from BC and brought here. Saabs are rarew here, and SPG's rarer. If it is in Martinsville it has problems everywhere, from little ones in the hood and the trunk latches, to annoying ones like a bad sunroof that won't close, to other big problems in seriously rusted calipers and brakes. The reason I wonder if it is the same one is the price is bang on with the price this guy was asking. It was WAY WAY too much! He thought he was selling gold, but it was lead.
$4800 CAN = $3200 USA. That is too much for a 1985 by at least 1000 dollars US. If it is a plane turbo and not an SPG, it is at least 1600 too much US.
Look at engine sound, smooth shifting tranny in and out of all gears, good turbo boost, quieter engine (no vlave tap), good braking downhill at speed, windshield wipers that work. Look at color of oil and tranny fluid and radiator fluid before AND after a 1/2 hour test drive. Smell rad fluid for odor of gasoline or burning. Look to see if after the test drive with the car at idle if there is mist coming up from the oil spiggot. That means blown engine. Also, before the drive make sure the radiator cap is on tight. Then, if after the test drive there is a pressure buildup in the radiator fluid reservoir, STAY AWAY. That means a blown head gasket and perhaps worse. See if engine revs when you give huge gas (WOT) at acceleration especially in 3, 4, and 5 gears. If that happens, the clutch is slipping. Use a 20 dollar engine compression tester to assure all cylinders are greater than 140-150 PSI, and all are within 5-10% of each other AFTER the test drive. Takes 15 minutes to check all 4. Turn on heat while driving to see if the air smells of rad fluid. Also, feel all the floor/rug to see if there are any water leaks, (even though water is hard this time of year in Canada). Check after warming the car up. DO NOT let the owner turn the heat down, even if it is really hot in the car. Horatio got stuck with that trick 3 months ago. Couldn't smell heater core radiator fluid when heater got turned off each time he turned it on.
P.S. - others might and will disagree, but Pirelli's on my last SPG were a disappointment. they slipped in rain and felt unstable in snow. Were OK on dry clean surfaces. Not a strong selling point with me. I can't remember if they were 4000's or not. Sumitomas were OK but wore out quickly, Goodyear GT4's were awesome (strangely enough). All were H or V rated.
