Tim,
I don't mean to insult your intelligence, I'm just going through all the scenarios here. If your SAAB was parked on unlevel ground, especially if it was with the driver's side downhill, that could make it read high.
However, if the SAAB was on level ground when checked, then I'd say it's about half a quart too full. Did the mechanic(s) really change the oil filter? (You can check 'em next time, if in doubt, by taking a knife/scribe and marking the oil filter before you turn your SAAB over to them for service.) If they didn't change the filter, it would leave about 1/2 quart of oil in the system. If they then added the recommended amount of oil, there's your 1/2 qt. too much!
I'd try to take that 1/2 quart out, somehow, whether you or they do it. Too much oil in the crankcase can lead to oil foaming, I'm told.
I have seen an electric pump gizmo with long tube that can suck oil out of your dipstick/filler pipe with minimum fuss, but it'd probably be cheaper to drain a bit out yourself (messy) or have the outfit that changed the oil do it.
Hope this helps!
